Rosemary is easily my go to herb when it comes to holistic health- it always has been.
I was introduced to this herb for its benefits on cognitive function and brain health. There are times when I find myself struggling with the occasional brain fog. In fact, after my first pregnancy loss, the brain fog was so bad I felt...unreal, as if I had stepped into an alternate reality and was watching my body live my life without being inside it. I guess, I would describe it as almost floating above my body. It was intense and frightening to say the least. I thought I was going insane!
During that time, I was looking into many tinctures and teas to help with brain function. I was so over this feeling of brain fog (which I later learned was caused by a vitamin deficiency, but we'll talk about that some other time) and was desperate for a solution. I didn't have insurance at the time so talking to a doctor was out of the question. So I decided to do my own research on herbs that help with these types of issues.
Of course, there were a number of other herbs I didn't know much about at the time, so I chose to settle on one that I had used previously and felt confident in working with.
Can you guess the herb?
Yep. It was Rosemary.
And as it turns out, Rosemary has a number of other holistic benefits. Not only is it great for brain health and is known to improve memory, but it's has amazing anti-inflammatory properties. If I can't get ahold of Turmeric, Rosemary is my next go-to for aches and pains.
You can take Rosemary a number of ways; teas, tinctures, rubs, and even adding it to your food!
Rubbing a Rosemary salve on your aches and pains is said to help reduce inflammation and aid with pain relief. Because of this, it is often recommended for arthritis and muscle pain.
Oh! And it stimulates hair growth! So if you're wanting to give your hair a little extra umpth, you can spray a steeped rosemary tea along the scalp. I've seen people make herbal ice cubes and rub them into their scalp while they're in the shower.
Aromatherapy wise, Rosemary is said to aid with stress, anxiety, and help one with reciliation.
And the great thing about Rosemary is it has little to no side effects (unless you're allergic or taking certain medications, of course. PLEASE speak to your doctor before taking this herb just in case!) And many people have already been introduced to this herb in means of meals throughout their life.
Now, on to the MAGICAL properties of this herb...
I'm sure you've probably heard that Rosemary can be used in place of any herb in spells and rituals if you don't have the one your look for.
Rosemary is also a great PROTECTIVE herb. It's often used in protection spells and charms. I personally like to add this herb to my black salt. Ancient peoples would often use Rosemary to ward off evil spirits and illnesses. It's also often used as to "ramp up" spells.
This herb is also known for being a symbol of remembrance and because of this, it is a great offering to leave for ancestors or to incorporate into your practice if you hold an ancestral path.
It can also be used to draw in love and romance, and can be used to catch the eye of a potential suiter.
You can also burn Rosemary to clear out unwanted spirits in the home. Though personally I prefer to dip a stick of Rosemary in blessed water and gently flick the water off the stick throughout a space to cleanse the area (or person!).
Have you used Rosemary in your practice? Do you include it in your holistic health routine? Or will you start to now that you've learned a little bit more about this wonderful herb?
